Metal mold casting
Metal mold casting is a modern process that uses metal (heat-resistant alloy steel, ductile iron, heat-resistant cast iron, etc.) to make hollow casting molds for casting.
Metal molds can be used for both gravity casting and pressure casting. The molds can be reused multiple times, with each pour of molten metal producing a single casting, resulting in a long service life and high production efficiency. Castings produced using metal molds not only have high dimensional accuracy and a smooth surface but also exhibit higher strength than sand-molded castings when poured with the same molten metal, making them less prone to damage. Therefore, in large-scale production of medium and small-sized castings of non-ferrous metals, as long as the melting point of the casting material is not too high, metal mold casting is generally preferred. However, metal mold casting also has some drawbacks: since heat-resistant alloy steel and the machining of hollow cavities on it are relatively expensive, the cost of metal molds is not inexpensive. However, compared to die-casting molds, the overall cost is significantly lower. For small-scale production, the mold costs per unit are clearly too high to be feasible. Additionally, due to limitations imposed by the size of the mold material, cavity machining equipment, and casting equipment capacity, metal molds are ineffective for particularly large castings. As a result, metal mold casting is rarely used in small-scale or large-scale production. Additionally, although metal molds use heat-resistant alloy steel, their heat resistance is still limited. They are primarily used for casting aluminum alloys, zinc alloys, and magnesium alloys, and are rarely used for copper alloy casting, and even less so for black metal casting.
